Political tension over the Dahr el-Baidar shipment continues. MPs disagree on whether the government can take a decisive decision to refer the file to the Judicial Council. Some warn strongly against new compromises that could bring back old crises.
MP Antoine Habchi said one party has admitted that the shipment belongs to it and that its weapons are outside the law. He asked why anyone is still waiting.
Habchi went on: “I am not afraid of an internal explosion if the authorities do not strike a deal. The greater fear is that the internal situation stays as it is until it ends in a clash. This is especially true if the executive keeps making the compromises that brought the country to where it is today.” He repeated his rejection of any compromise. He is waiting for a clear government position that reveals all the background to this event, which he called a defining moment in the country’s history.
MP George Atallah ended the discussion. “If referring the file to the Judicial Council is a matter of a vote, the government can make the decision,” he said. He noted that the Shiite duo’s dissatisfaction was clear in more than one earlier decision. Still, he said, the government, with its majority, can take and adopt the decision.
