Lebanon’s political scene is busy with debate over the next elections. Parties and blocs disagree on when, or whether, they will take place. Here is where they stand.

Some MPs and blocs are pessimistic. They are certain the elections will not be held for another four years. They also warn that parliamentary committee meetings could become a distraction. In their view, such meetings keep Lebanese people busy with minor details and draw attention away from the main issues.

Other parties urged that the debate over the election law not become a goal in itself. They said that once political and security conditions allow, they will do everything possible to bring the elections closer. This would let people choose their representatives. It would also produce a new parliament that breaks the current deadlock.

Other MPs said that talk of an election law is premature while part of the country is occupied and disputes over weapons continue. In their view, stability must come first. They reminded readers that they have always supported holding the elections on time. They also rejected accusations that they are obstructing them.
