The deputy head of Lebanon’s National Anti-Corruption Commission, Dr. Fawaz Kabbara, announced tough measures against municipal officials. They failed to file their financial disclosure declarations within the legal deadlines.
Kabbara said the ongoing investigations into these declarations have reached several prominent political and social figures. Some of the names were unexpected. The commission sent them formal warnings for not complying with the law.
He said the campaign also covered many municipal members who did not complete and submit the required documents. Their excuse was being busy with private work.
As a result, the commission issued a decision about a month ago to dismiss more than 140 municipal council members across Lebanon. It came with a firm message: “the rope is still on the jar,” meaning more action is coming.
Kabbara stressed that municipal work is not a social status symbol or a political cover. It is a public service that demands full transparency and accountability. In his view, filing a financial disclosure is a basic part of that transparency. It applies to everyone, whether a minister, a governor, a military officer or a municipal council member.
