MP Paula Yacoubian condemned the objections to her attending the parliamentary meeting on the general amnesty. She said the objections did not come only from MP Bilal Abdallah. A wide group of MPs objected, even before she arrived.

In statements to The Speech, Yacoubian asked why sectarian considerations are brought into every detail. She stressed that the amnesty and the detention of convicts is a purely rights-based, humanitarian issue. In her words, it is about lifting injustice.

She also asked what justifies sectarian gatherings inside Parliament. She noted that she has submitted an amnesty bill herself. She said she fully sympathizes with these cases.

Yacoubian ended with one positive note. Other parties, she said, will now think twice before raising sectarian issues this way. In her view, priority must stay with rights-based and legal issues that unite people. The country is already suffering enough tragedies.
